Overview

The Tsum Valley is virtually unexplored by outsiders as it was only opened to trekkers in 2008. It, like the Nubri Valley, is a “Beyul”, a sacred Valley that was blessed and designated as a place of refuge by Guru Rinpoche. The Valley also lies within the Kyimlung Valley, meaning the “Valley of Happiness” The Valley lies to the west of the main Manaslu Circuit and borders Tibet.

Itinerary

Day 1

Kathmandu Arrival (1,400m)

Upon arrival, be greeted by our team at the airport and let us help you settle in.

Day 2

Kathmandu Preparation

Take this day to explore, shop, and prepare for the trek departure. This evening meet our team over dinner for the Trek Briefing.

Day 3

Kathmandu to Machha Khola (930m)

Drive 9 hours

Drive along the Kathmandu-Pokhara Highway, and then along the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River for the remainder of the drive.

Day 4

Machha Khola to Jagat (1,410m)

Trek 8 hours / Strenuous

Begin today’s trek weaving through small Gurung villages and crossing over long suspension bridges.

Day 5

Jagat to Lokpa (2,240m)

Trek 7 hours / Strenuous

This is exactly the point at which you enter into the hidden valley of Tsum. Begin the ascent to Lokpa.

Day 6

Lokpa to Chumling (2,386m)

Trek 7 hours / Moderate

You will witness Mt. Ganesh Himal and Mt. Baudha Himal. And you will pass through many old mani walls and stupas.

Day 7

Chumling to Chokhangparo (3,031m)

Trek 6 hours / Moderate

The climate and landscape starts changing as we go deeper into the Tsum Valley.

Day 8

Chokhangparo to Nile (3,361m)

Trek 6 hours / Moderate

You will admire how unique this area is due to the presence of numerous ancient gompas and chortens on the way.

Day 9

Nile to Mu Gompa (3,700m)

Trek 5 hours / Strenuous

The Mu Gompa, which lies at 3700 m. carries ancient history of Buddhism, culture, and of the civilization there.

Day 10

Mu Gompa Day Trip

Trek 6 hours / Moderate

Exploring such an ancient place will provide a glimpse into the rich historical past.

Day 11

Mu Gompa to Chokhangparo (3,031m)

Trek 7 hours / Moderate

Visit Milarepa's Cave, who was one of the greatest yogis and poets in history, and also known as the "Great Magician Saint of Buddhism." It is here that it is believed he spent 12 years in meditation.

Day 12

Chekhangparo to Gompa Lodang (3,200m)

Trek 7 hours / Moderate

The Gompa itself carries a long old history, and the priest there will give us holy information about the monastery.

Day 13

Gumpa Lodang to Lokpa (2,240m)

Trek 7 hours / Strenuous

At this point, the descent becomes much steeper and more exciting.

Day 14

Lokpa to Pewa (1,800m)

Trek 7 hours / Moderate

It is on this day, we officially exit the Tsum Valley.

Day 15

Pewa to Bihi (2,130m)

Trek 6 hours / Moderate

On this day, we arrive at the intersection that leads to either the Nubri or the Tsum Valley. For this trek, we head upwards towards the Nubri Valley. We arrive in Bihi, a village terraced into the mountainside with tremendous views. ​

Bihi to Serang (3,200m)

Trek 9 hours / Strenuous

A huge ascent, leaving the Nubri Valley floor and passing through a small village terraced into the steep mountainsides.

Day 17

Sustainable Serang Stay

Take this days to fully immerse yourself at Serang, the remote Buddhist sanctuary. We will have a special program waiting.

Day 18

Sustainable Serang Stay

Take another day to immerse yourself in this sanctuary.

Day 19

Serang to Ghap (2,160m)

Trek 9 hours / Strenuous

Descend to Ghap, a forested village on the river.

Day 20

Ghap to Namrung (2,660m)

Trek 6 hours / Strenuous

Pass through thick pinewood, bamboo, and rhododendron forests.

Day 21

Namrung to Shayala (3,280m)

Trek 7 hours / Strenuous

Enter the breathtaking high Himalayan alpine landscape.

Day 22

Shyala to Pungyen Lake (3,900m) to Shyala (3,280m)

Trek 5 hours / Strenuous

Take this day to rest or visit the sacred Pungyen Lake with unbelievable views of Manaslu.

Day 23

Shyala to Sama (3,530) (Birendra Taal Lake)

Trek 3 hours / Moderate

Stay at Sama, the largest village in the Valley and also recognized as the trade capital of the Valley. Take this day to rest or visit the sacred Birendra Lake with unbelievable views of Manaslu.

Day 24

Sama to Samdo (3,690m)

Trek 4 hours / Moderate

Pass by mani walls, visit the sacred Birendra Taal lake, and stay at Samdo, among the highest altitude all season settlements in Nepal.

Day 25

Samdo to Dharamshala (4,470m)

Trek 4 hours / Moderate

Begin the ascent to the Larke La. Stay at a simplistic lodge, traditionally used for herders.

Day 26

Dharamshala to Larke Pass (5,160m) to Bhimtang (3,720m)

Trek 10 hours / Strenuous

A challenging day, but among the most scenic and spectacular. Today, it feel as if you are deep within the high mountains.

Day 27

Bhimtang to Goa (2,560m)

Trek 7 hours / Moderate

Walk through rich forests and along the Dudh Khola River with stunning views

Day 28

Goa to Tilche and Drive to Besishar (760m)

Trek 3 hours / Moderate

Trek to Tilche and take a jeep to Besishar with continuity down valley along the Marsyangdi River.

Day 29

Besishar to Kathmandu (1,400m)

Drive 10 hours

Drive back to Kathmandu along an exciting, bumpy road.

Take this day or multiple days to reacquaint yourself with city life, relax, and explore.
